Scientifically its the transition state between wakefulness and rest characterized by complete muscle atonia (muscle weakness).  I’ve known several people who have had sleep paralysis, who have even made characters who share the same trait. I’ve never suffered from it myself but I find the folklore around it fascinating, because no matter what nation of origin it always has to do with the visitation of a demon or vengeful spirit who either sits on, restrains, or strangles said victim. And so I drew my own little depiction of it, complete with a demon girl puking black stuff on a guy. i don’t like the white savior plot device, but i do love Daenerys’ character, a strong woman who is freeing slaves and wants to conquer a the neighboring continent with them. i could get with character like that whether black, white, red, blue, or striped like a zebra. as for sci fi writers fulfilling their fetish desires. i see it more as romanticism. growing up in the western world, these writers are fulfilling their romantic desires, which revolves around the belief that they live in the more “civilized” part of the world, thus them wanting to emphasize the most barbaric and “noble savage” themes of the eastern and oriental world, when depicting fictional barbarian cultures. i don’t think the show, writers, viewers, or author is racist. the show does however, reflect how many perceive race and the world today.

When is the suffering going to stop for these people. It’s history in the making and I only hear updates on NPR :/ hopefully now, now that we’re more involved in the matter.
